Who's Who in Pentecost > Marvin Oliver Holt Sr.

Rev. Marvin Oliver Holt Sr.

Rev. Marvin Oliver Holt, Sr. was born on May 29, 1924 in Athens, Alabama and passed away on August 11, 1991 in Crestview, Florida. He was on a team of ministers who planted two Pentecostal Churches in the State of Florida, and served as pastor in each of them.

He had a radio ministry from 1968 to 1983 on WJSB in Crestview, Florida. His sermons were broadcast every Sunday morning with mostly preaching and teaching on the "Oneness of God" to audiences in Northwest Florida and South Alabama.

The first church he assisted in planting was in 1949. He, along with Bro. Sherrill and Bro. Paul Montgomery, held a two weeks tent revival in Ocala, Florida. During this revival Bro. Holt's brother-in-law, J.T. Bass would attend the services, receive the Holy Ghost, and was baptized in Jesus' Name. Following the tent revival, the men rented a building and named it "The Pentecostal Assemblies of Jesus Christ." brother Holt would serve as its first pastor but would later resign and move to Crestview, Florida to assist in planting a second church in September 1953. The young Rev. J.T. Bass would become pastor of the Ocala church and began his own Pentecostal Legacy with his family. His son, Rev. Wade Bass, and grandson, Rev. Timothy Bass have served there as pastors for many years. Today, the church is known as "Ocala Church."

The Holt family came to Crestview, Florida in September 1953, with plans to preach a tent revival and possibly plant another church with the assistance of Rev. Rex Padgett and Rev. John Adkison. They used the same plan as in Ocala, stretch a tent, and hold a two weeks revival. The people around Crestview supported the revival greatly, and the family who owned the property the tent set up on donated it to start a church. Construction on the "First Pentecostal Church" began right away. Elder Holt pastored the church from 1953 to 1986. During his years as pastor, he witnessed many new converts being filled with the Holy Ghost and baptized in Jesus' Name. During his days as pastor, he was also called upon to teach and preach the "Oneness of God" in other churches, camp meetings, and revivals across the southeastern United States.

In February 1986, Elder Holt suffered from a massive stroke which left him completely paralyzed, and he could not speak above a whisper. This ended his ministry, unless you stopped by to visit him, and he would still teach from his bedside if you had questions for him regarding the "Oneness of God." The church continued with his son-in-law, the late Rev. Wilbur Hawkins, as pastor until his death on September 6, 2012. Today, "The First Pentecostal Church" is still in operation with 3rd generation Pastors, Scott and Michelle Hannah. Elder Holt was an "old time Acts 2:38 preacher" and leaves behind a legacy of Pentecost to his 9 children, his 27 grandchildren, his 41 great grandchildren, and his 7 great, great, grandchildren. many of them are currently serving as pastors, youth leaders, praise and worship leaders, Sunday school teachers, and just good solid church members across the southeastern United States.
